A "sign and go" ceremony means an authorized officiant legally marries you by reviewing your license, declaring you married, and signing the paperwork without requiring a formal, traditional wedding ceremony or any witnesses.
Essential Legal Requirements
- An Authorized Officiant Must Sign: You cannot simply sign your own license. It must be signed by an authorized person, such as a licensed or ordained minister, a priest, a rabbi, or a Texas judge/justice of the peace.
- The 72-Hour Wait Period: You cannot buy a marriage license and have an officiant sign it on the same day. You must wait 72 hours after receiving your license from the Bexar County Marriage License Office before the officiant can legally sign it, unless you have a military or judicial waiver.
No Witnesses Needed: Texas law does not require any witnesses to be present for the signing. Only you, your partner, and the officiant are necessary.
90-Day Expiration Clock: The "sign and go" meeting must happen within 90 days of your license issuance date, or the license expires.
