Who is legally allowed to officiate in Texas? 

Under Texas Family Code Section 2.202, only specific religious leaders and judicial officers are legally authorized to officiate a marriage ceremony. Texas does not require wedding officiants to register with any government office before performing a ceremony.

This legally includes individuals ordained online through non-denominational organizations like the Universal Life Church or American Marriage Ministries.

  • State Judges: Includes current, former, or retired judges from Texas state courts (such as Supreme Court justices, appeals court judges, district court judges, county judges, and justices of the peace).
